August Housing Unlimited Staff Spotlight: Tracy Mack - A Journey of Service, Leadership, and Compassion

Updated: Sep 11

Tracy Mack is a dedicated professional whose life story is defined by a commitment to service, leadership, and compassion for others. Originally from Chicago, Illinois, Tracy spent his formative years in Aiken, South Carolina before embarking on a journey that would see him serve his country and later dedicate his career to helping others find homes.

Tracy's professional journey began in the United States Navy, where he served with distinction for 10 years as a Disbursing Clerk (Military Accountant). His time in the Navy not only instilled in him a strong work ethic but also a deep-seated desire to help those around him. After being stationed at the National Naval Medical Center in Maryland, Tracy made the decision to settle in the area, driven by the birth of his son, Jessie. His role as a father became a pivotal motivation in his life, grounding him in Maryland and propelling him into a new career path.

In 1997, after leaving the Navy, Tracy found himself at a crossroads. He stumbled into the residential property management field, a discovery that would shape the next two decades of his career. Tracy began working as a Resident Manager for Southern Management, a role that allowed him to channel his passion for helping others into creating safe and welcoming living environments. Over the course of 20 years, Tracy honed his skills and built a reputation as a reliable and compassionate property manager.

In 2019, Tracy transitioned to non-profit property management, taking on the role of Senior Property Manager at Coalition Homes, a division of the Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless. This position allowed him to make a tangible impact in the fight to end homelessness in Montgomery County. Tracy’s dedication to this cause was recognized when he became certified as an Occupancy Specialist and Apartment Home Manager in 2020. His work at Coalition Homes was not just a job; it was a mission to provide stable housing for the most vulnerable members of his community.

Driven by a desire to continue his work in non-profit housing, Tracy discovered Housing Unlimited, Inc. (HUI) through a job search on Indeed. The organization’s mission resonated deeply with him, and he eagerly applied for a Property Manager position. For the past 16 months, Tracy has been a key member of the HUI team, where he finds joy in interacting with both residents and colleagues. His favorite part of the job is welcoming new residents and showing them the homes where they will start a new chapter of their lives.

One particular experience stands out in Tracy’s time at HUI, reflecting his ability to mediate and foster positive relationships among residents. In a house where one resident’s well-intentioned but overly assertive behavior was causing tension, Tracy stepped in to facilitate a house meeting. Through open communication and the development of a chore chart with the help of Cornerstone Montgomery, the housemates reached consensus on a path forward to restoring mutual respect and harmony in the home. This experience underscores his belief in the importance of clear communication and mutual respect in creating a cohesive living environment.

Outside of work, Tracy has a variety of interests that bring balance and joy to his life. He is an avid fan of anime and enjoys the creative process of baking. Additionally, he loves to travel, particularly on cruises to tropical destinations, where he can unwind and recharge.

Tracy’s work at Housing Unlimited continues to make a positive impact on the lives of our tenants, and his story is an inspiration to anyone dedicated to making a difference in their community.
